In dante’s inferno, violence is one of the three major main sins that a human can commit.Suicide falls in that category. While one feels sympathy towards the plight of suicide victims, In Dante’s time it was seen as a sin
According to Canto VII, suicide is considered a violent act. It is harming one’s self. It is surprising to see that regardless of the harm done to a person, they cannot take their life to alleviate the pain. One example is the monk Pietro della Vigna. He was blinded and imprisoned after falling out of favor. He was so desperate, that he took his own life in order to seek solace.
Unfortunetly, God saw this as a sin and he went to hell. This shows that people at the time followed the bible closely. God does not allow people to forsake their bodies since it was his beautiful creation. Dante believes this as well. He displays this with his vivid depictions of the dead bodies as trees, without human form since they were ungrateful of the bodies they already had. This was not a mention in the bible. This was Dante’s take on what he think should and will happen. This ultimately shows that while Dante feels sympathy for the victims of suicide, he still sees it as being ungrateful to god, and thus a sin punishable by eternal hell.
