Week 15, Sundiata
Week 12, Dante’s Inferno.
Throughout the Dante’s Inferno, Dante shows a fearful depiction of what hell looks like. Throughout this story, Dante Alighieri shows the value of religion in the European society at the time.
One example of this was portrayed in the souls of the uncommitted. These were the people who never chose sides. These people never chose between good or evil and remained neutral, yet in the eyes of god were seen as evil and sent to hell. Choosing anything other than “good” in the eyes of religion was seen as evil and hell worthy. This shows that in the society during Dante’s time, religion was not a matter of choice. It was important and one had to be religious or considered an evil man. People had to always walk in the path of the lord of eventually face this hell that was envisioned at the time. This book shows the beliefs and fears of hell at the time. This shows society’s idea of picking religion of facing hell.
Another example of this was Limbo. Limbo was the first circle of hell. Although these people were never fully considered sinners, these were people that were either unbaptized or never fully accepted christ. They didn’t have to sin or be a bad person to end up here. This shows the immense value and importance of religion in this era. Limbo is a circle of hell and people can be good and still end up there unless they fully accept the religion. Just like the uncommitted, it was telling society to either pick religion or go to hell. People who weren’t religious were considered on a path to hell.
Depictions of hell including anyone who is not religious going to hell essentially scares people into following the religion and it’s principles. Inferno is one of these depictions. Stories like these scare people into valuing religion or face the consequences in this book. It kept the population devoted to god and fearing his wrath.
Week 11, Macbeth.
Despite being a lower social status through history, Women in Macbeth are shown to be more powerful than males. It is the women in the story that set off all the unfortunate series of events in the story through their influence. The powerful influence of a woman in Macbeth is shown to be cataclysmic and proves to be the real monster in the story.
The first example of this are the witches. These women are the ones who set off the whole problem that begins the tragedies in the play. Theses women were able to predict the future. Whilst knowing that that their actions will directly contribute to the tragedy of Macbeth’s fate, they still decide to tell him. This sets the story in motion and puts the desire in Macbeth to commit the first murder. These women did not fight like men, they did not even have a major story in the play. All they did was tell Macbeth something and this was enough to trigger the events. Their extreme power came in a couple of words. Their words were enough to corrupt a man’s heart and disrupt the natural order and change the course of history. The whole plot of the story only happened because of the witches, yet they only played a minor role. Just a little part that they played created a disaster. These women held the true powerful influence that ultimately killed many.
Another woman with immense power was Lady Macbeth. She saw an opportunity to become queen and went for it. Knowing that she could corrupt her husband, she exploited his deepest desire for kingship. She saw knew that a man would always fight for his manliness, so she challenged Macbeth’s manliness. Seeing his manliness in question, Macbeth used this manliness and acted upon his desire to become king. While Macbeth consistently feared and hesitated in his actions, Lady Macbeth was always the one to convince him that he should commit the killings in order to get what she wanted. She essentially expanded Macbeth’s desire to become king and set his actions into place. It was she that disrupted the usual order of Macbeth’s character and by proxy, he became a monster and disrupted the kingdom himself.
It was these women’s influences that was the true monster. These influences disrupted the natural order and cause chaos among the whole kingdom. Without these women influencing the men, the events would have never transpired, thus normalcy would have continued.0
