Week 2, Genesis 1

In Genesis 1, the world is created by God. The God is the one and only creator. He creates everything out of his own power. God plays an all powerful role and is able to create things on his own command without any materials. He starts off by creating the heavens and earth. From nothing, God somehow made those things. There was no implication as to how he created the Earth and heavens. However, we can assume it was made from his power by how he continues to create things on command.

The first example of this was in the beginning when it states “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness [a]was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.” The earth was empty and had no form. There was also complete darkness. Somehow God made light. While it does say that God made light out of darkness, what really is darkness? Darkness is the absence of light. Therefore the darkness is just lightless and empty. With his powers, God created light for an Earth that was void of anything else. With this light he created, God was then able to create time. The light was morning and dark evening. With his all mighty powers, he created time through the creation of light. The author uses this idea to show god’s power. He could create light from nothing. The author uses this power to show that god is the all mighty creator. The author wants to convey god in a good light.

God then goes on to continue creating our world with his powers. He goes on to create things such as the sea, land, animals and people. He does this all with his power. With each creation, God announces it and it comes into fruition. Genesis 1 states “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over [g]all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”. God simply announced that he shall make man in his image and man was born. He used his powers to create humans into existence. Everything in the world was created by the power of the all creator known as God. The author wants to emphasize the miracles created by god. The author stats off with an announce ment from god before he creates things in order to show his power. The author wants to emphasize the idea of God being able to say “I want to create this” then using his power in order to do so. The author purposely left out the specifics of what God used to create things. They want the reader to think that the explanation is a miracle from God. All he has to do is command it and it shall be.

The author shows that everything in this world that God created also served a purpose for the humans. Before creating key things, God announced it’s purpose. One example is when God created plantlife. Before creating it, God said ““Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so.”. He created the plantlife for fruit. Then, after he creates humans, he says to them “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.” He created the plant life before the humans with the specific intention of having them eat the fruits of the plant life. God’s intention was to create the world for the people that he made in his image. The author wants to convey that God created everything specifically for us to enjoy. The author uses the example of the fruit tree to show God as a provider and a creator that we are indebted to. The author shows that God feeds us and created this world for us so we should respect him. The main objective of Genesis and the bible is to promote a religion, and showing God as the one and only power behind our survival helps garner respect for him.
